Operation al-Anfal

Also known as the Kurdish genocide, the al - Anfal campaign or simply Anfal, was one of the reasons for the Iraq-Iran want and also one of the reasons why United States entry to Iraq.

Known campaign against the Kurds (and other non-Arab populations) in the North of Iraq, led by Saddam Hussein's Baathist regime and directed by Ali Hassan al - Majeed in the final stages of the war between Iran and Iraq (1980-1988). The campaign takes its name from the Surah al - Anfal in the Quran (Holy Book of islam), which was the code name used by the Baathist regime for a series of systematic attacks against the Kurdish people in the North of Iraq, made between 1986-1989 and culminated in 1988. The campaign was also directed against other minority communities in the country, including Assyrians, Jews, shabaks, yazidis, mandeans and Turkmen and the villages of these ethnic groups were destroyed. It is estimated that you between 50 000 and 182 000 people were killed. Sweden, Norway and the United Kingdom recognized the campaign officially al - Anfal genocide. On 5 December 2012, the Swedish Parliament Riksdag approved a resolution by the Green party to officially recognize as genocide Anfal. The resolution was approved by all of the 349 members of Parliament. On February 28, 2013 the Chamber of the Commons of the British Parliament formally recognized the genocide Anfal as a result of a campaign led by the parliamentary conservative Nadhim Zahawi.
